David L. Passmore was interviewed on 1 August 2007 by public radio station in Harrisburg, WITF-FM, about an Economic & Workforce Brief that Rose Baker and Passmore prepared about the impact of federal military spending (see http://train.ed.psu.edu/brief, which links to an Adobe PDF file for the Brief on federal military spending). The interview was on WITF this morning. From the WITF-FM (NPR, Harrisburg, Pennsylvania) news archive web site:

Economic role of midstate military installations highlighted in new study
Scott Gilbert (WITF)—New research from Penn State underscores the role of federal military spending in the midstate economy. The school’s Office for Economic and Workforce Development compiled a brief that examines an eight-county region. It finds that every 100 military jobs create $2.4 million in direct compensation and another $500,000 for workers in other sectors.

Researcher David Passmore says the impact can also be viewed in terms of outright job creation. Passmore says this type of research demonstrates that when federal military spending in the region grows or shrinks, other industries are affected as well. The counties included in the study are Adams, Cumberland, Dauphin, Franklin, Juniata, Lebanon, Perry and York.
